The Photo Book

I'm sure the few of you who read this blog know that I've been working my buns off trying to get the Shutterfly photo book finished in time to get it free.  That was the offer in the email I got from them a week or so ago.  At times, it went pretty smoothly...but, about 50% of the time I wasn't having a good time.

I ended up uploading nearly 300 photos to the website.  And I'm pretty happy with the end result which shows a glimpse of all the events and travels and occasions that have occurred for the first six months of this year.  I stayed up till way past 2 AM for the last two nights and still had more editing to do this morning.

My plan was to do the editing and then pack up and head to Port Alto for a couple of days of visiting with Wanda and Lark.  Alas!  Didn't happen.  When I called to let Wanda know that I wasn't going to make it today, she said that if the weather got rainy down there, they might leave early.  So, it was decided that I wouldn't go at all.  It's disappointing, but we'll have almost two weeks together very soon when we go look at leaves in New England.

Back to the freaking photo book.  I had trouble off and on with uploading new photos to the website.  The Express Uploader would do well for a little while and then suddenly stop.  Possibly it's a compatibility issue with Windows 7.  I could do it through Picasa, but they were proud of the fact that they uploaded the very  best quality photo, which makes a much bigger file that takes much longer to upload, but is the best for archiving (not what I needed).  The Express Uploader offered several options to choose from, the 'fast' one being excellent for photo books, calendars, and cards.  And it was pretty fast.

Anyway, to finish this never-ending (it seems) story, I got it all edited and prettied up.  Saved it again and then went to checkout.  The free book was 20 pages long.  My book is 45 pages long.  I like to have fewer pictures on a page, so that's why so many pages.  A few pages had only 1 or 2 photos, but most had 3-5.  I was hoping that all I would have to pay for would be the extra pages, tax and shipping.  I applied the free book code and it worked...yay!  I also had a coupon code for free shipping for items over $30, so I put that code in.  I was reaching and I knew it, because the $31.15 I owed included tax and shipping...but, I gave it a shot.  It informed me that I couldn't use that coupon on this order.  I clicked forward to the payment page and put all that information in.  But, when I looked at the amount I was going to be charged, it was wrong...I guess the coupon I couldn't use reset the total back to the original, so I had to go back and re-enter the free book code.  Then back to the payment page where I had to re-enter all that stuff, but the total was right.  Just as I was about to press the "submit order" button, the power flickered and I lost the internet connection.

I thought that was curious since my internet modem and my wireless router are both plugged into a battery backup.  I would not have expected to lose the connection.  And the power just flickered...for a fraction of a second.  Oh, well.  It was re-established in just a minute or two and I was able to order the book.  And that's good news for you because you won't have to hear about it any more!

Except now I need to start uploading photos from the second half of the year.  Probably to all 3 of the photo websites I use...just to be ready for that really good deal.

You never know...

I was inspired to write this post after reading Cousin J's post today about her children's first day of kindergarten.  It all went so well, for the children, for the parents and, I guess, for the grandmother.  She didn't say how the grandmother did, but I'm guessing it was okay for her, too.

I commented to her that I was going to write a post about my experience dropping my first born, Wendy, off at school and driving away.  So, here goes...

I was really ready for Wendy to be out of the house.  Now, I know that sounds bad.  I don't really mean it to be negative, but you know how kids can just get on your last nerve sometime.  Wendy and I could never seem to find a meeting of the minds.  No matter what I said, she would have a point of disagreement.  In other words, it seemed to me that if I said something was black she would immediately argue that it was white.  Thank goodness, I don't thing she remembers it that way, however, so that's a good thing.

She was ready to go to school, too.  She was probably tired of not having anyone as smart as she was to talk to around the house.

The day came and we got all her things together, ready to give her the chance to spread her wings.  Once at school, we helped her get her things put away and then it was time for us to go.  I honestly thought it was going to be easy; I certainly never thought I would get emotional about it.  Well, you never know...

When she walked us back to our car and gave us a hug, I could barely keep from bursting into tears.  We pulled away from the curb and she went back into her apartment at College Station, about to begin her freshman year at Texas A & M.

You might think I'm just trying to be funny.  I'm not, this time.  The truth is, I think that was one of the hardest good-byes I've ever had to say.  I still get choked up thinking about it.

Random Negative Thoughts

My internet connection has been running so slow for most of the afternoon that I'm about ready to open a vein.  I don't know which is more annoying...the fact that it's so slow or the fact that I'm still sitting here instead of finding something much more productive to do.

I got all (or almost all) of the photos uploaded to Shutterfly, but then have not been able to save more than the title page.  I was on page 2, but only got 3 photos on it, having to wait FOREVER between drops.  I saved it once and then closed it without saving...how much could I lose?  Very frustrating.

Another frustrating thing that's been going on for a while in Blogger is that when I reach the end of a paragraph and hit "enter" twice to start a new paragraph I never know where the cursor is going to land.  Usually it's at the beginning of the paragraph I just finished.  Sometimes it's higher up in the text, in a previous paragraph.  What's up with that?  I finally realized, after using the mouse or the touch pad to move the cursor to the proper position (numerous times), that if I just start typing, it actually does go to the right position.  But still, it's stupid.

And another thing...on this fancy laptop when I want to use Caps Lock, I hit it and then have to wait several seconds while it puts a message on the lower right had corner alerting me to CAPS LOCK: ON.  I put that in caps because that's how the message is shown.  Then the same thing happens when I turn CAPS LOCK: OFF.  That just seems unnecessary to me.  I really think that one would notice whether it's on or off within the first 2 letters.

Now I have to go make supper.  Pizza.  Not frozen.  I have to open a package and take out the crust.  Then I have to open another package and spread the sauce on the crust.  Then I add whatever else I want on it.  I think I'll do half hamburger & jalapenos (for Wayne) and half supreme (for me.)  He called my cell phone from the bedroom downstairs a hour or so ago to see if I wanted to go out to eat.  I declined, as I look hideous.

Oh, and just one more thing before I go.  After about two and a half weeks signing in on this laptop, the facial recognition software still doesn't recognize me 97% of the time even though I look EXACTLY the same every time.

Just Wondering

For no particular reason, I suddenly wondered why people don't have their belly buttons removed when they are having surgery in that area.  Surely, belly buttons aren't necessary for any reason.  Or would you just look too stupid without one?  At least your tummy would be nice and smooth...even if it's not flat.

I think the belly button is used as a positional spot for the Heimlich maneuver, though...so maybe it is necessary if you plan to choke on something.

As I said, just wondering.

Such a doofus!

I've been uploading photos to the Shutterfly website because I got an email from them saying that I could get a free photo book.  You might remember from a previous post that I had uploaded over 200 photos to the Snapfish website because they had 50% off on photo books.  The website slowed down so much, however, that I wasn't able to get even halfway through a 20 page book before the offer expired.

So, now comes this deal from Shutterfly, which means I have to upload the 200+ photos again, this time to their website.  They have an Express Uploader that can be downloaded.  That worked pretty well for the first 100 photos, but then it all bogged down and would only upload 1 or 2 before the uploader stopped working.  I uninstalled it once and reinstalled, but that didn't help.  Then I tried uploading using the old uploader.  But, no luck there either.

I looked at the Help section and found out that I could upload directly to Shutterfly from the Picasa program that "captures" (my word, not Picasa's) all the photos I download to my computer.  I installed Picasa a year or two ago.  That's where I do my photo editing.  It has some other cool bells and whistle, such as facial recognition...which tries to select faces from every image I save to the computer and group them with like faces.  In other words, every time Wayne, say, is in a picture, it saves that picture in a folder with all the rest of the Wayne pictures.  Seemed like a good idea when I enabled that function...but, now I'm beginning to wonder why I would ever need such a file.

But here's why I'm such a doofus.  I have been popping back and forth between the recliner in the bedroom and the computer in the office, looking to see if the photos have finished uploading so I can select and upload the next batch.  After doing that several times, I thought, "Idiot!  You have a laptop and a wireless connection!"  So, I unplugged the laptop, and wiggled the A/C adapter from the power strip thingy.  I took the plug into the bedroom and plugged it in and then brought the laptop in and got comfy.  I can watch television and upload pictures and post to my blog...all at the same time! Nice...but kinda dumb that I forgot I could do that.

As if that wasn't dumb enough, when I got into the recliner with the computer on my lap, I forgot to plug it in.  I never noticed until the display dimmed a little bit.  By then, it had only about 56% battery life left.  And that was the second time in less than 24 hours that has happened.  Last night I had used the laptop in the bedroom and when I finished, I unplugged from the laptop and then from the power strip.  I took the A/C adapter back into the office and plugged it in, and then took the laptop back to the office.  And forgot to plug it in.  It was backing up some files to Carbonite, so I didn't shut it down.  It ran out of juice sometime during the night, poor thing.  I suppose I should just get in the habit of taking the laptop and the A/C adapter at the same time.  I think I might remember to plug it in if I did that.

I know one thing...I need to buy a 2nd A/C adapter so I can leave the one in the office plugged in.  I'm going to leave parts of it in the power strip one of these days if I have to keep wiggling it out.  And then I would be, to quote my mother, who never cussed, "in a mell of a hess."

Holy cow, Batman!

Or maybe I should holy smoke...as it's almost hot enough for items to self-combust.  My computer tells me it's 105 degrees!!!  The Weatherbug program says 104.9, but it got rounded up that tenth when it migrated to the taskbar.  That's just crazy.  Sure would be nice to have a pool, although I'm pretty sure I don't have the energy to wiggle into my swimsuit.  Even if it were clean.  I haven't washed it since my last trip to the bay...I really ought to go put it in the washer right now...

I'm currently trying to restore the email stuff from the Carbonite backup drive.  I can't really tell if it's working or not, although it is on a different file from the one it was (apparently) restoring before the computer performed a mini-dump.  I don't know what that means...the screen suddenly went dark (or blue...don't remember) and a message came up that said a bunch of stuff, which I didn't have time to read before it disappeared again.  All I read was something about needing to restart the computer...blah, blah, blah...blue screen...blah, blah, blah...and then it shut down.  When I started it up there was another (more professional looking) message that gave a little information and invited me to click on a link that would give me more details.  I declined the invitation, however.  From what I read I could tell that it might as well be written in Navajo.

I don't even know why I'm trying to restore all the old emails from the old computer, really.  I have it on the old computer if I need to find something.  And about finding something specific.  Come on.  I have (probably) thousands of messages on there stored in at least 20 folders...the Inbox and 19 sub-folders.  I have filters directing which folder an email should go to when it hits the Inbox.  Some go directly to the Trash folder.  If this Restore process doesn't work...or at least complete by tomorrow...maybe I just won't worry about it.  I did copy all that stuff to a flash drive, too.  Anyhooo, just because I remember getting an email about a certain subject or sending one, doesn't guarantee that I will be able to find it again.

My bluetooth mouse is suddenly acting like it's on crack again.  The cursor is acting like an anti-magnet.  Is there such a thing?  When I try to land the cursor on, say, the minimize button, it circles around it but refuses to go near it.  Well, now it's acting okay...it must have been distracted by the mini-dump.

And I can tell that the Restore is actually doing something.  No sooner had I expressed doubts than the Restore window jumped the numbers and gave me an estimated time for completion.  Of course, it could be wrong.  It said 9 hours.  Six hours ago when I started it, it said 10 hours.

Gotta bounce!  I have a pot of pinto beans working that need draining and rinsing, etc.

In the house, thank goodness!

My Weatherbug application tells me it's 102 degrees outside.  It's 6:17 PM, for crying out loud!  I guess it could be worse.  It could be hot AND humid.  Oh, wait...it is hot and humid.

So, I'm sitting here watching a movie that I'm not very interested while I mess around on the computer.  I'm making an attempt to copy all my folders, filters and messages from the old computer.  Don't have complete confidence in what I'm doing, but no guts, no glory...right?  I've copied the emails on the new computer to a file on the desktop just in case they get lost during this process.

Carolyn and Kate came over for a little while after lunch.  She carried off some of their (her) things that were still here.  And that's a good thing.

I was looking through some folders of scanned photos yesterday and found this one of Gage at about 18 months or so.  I clearly remember that we couldn't quit laughing and poor Gage seemed to know how ridiculous he looked.  He had that look that dogs get when they have to wear that "funnel" collar.  I can't decide which he looks more like...an oompa loompa, Tweedledee & Tweedledum, or Humpty Dumpty.  This will have to be in his wedding video someday.  But, for sure it doesn't look safe.  It looks like all the bouyancy is right in the middle and the suit wouldn't care which end was up.  He looks like a bobber on a fishing line, doesn't he?

I also found this one of Cousin Hannah holding baby Robin back in 1981.  Hannah is expecting her own baby girl in a few months.  What a sweet picture!

It's been fun having to go through the computer looking for stuff.  I keep finding these wonderful photos!

The router adventures

Picture me dancing around the room singing.  I actually got my router installed and I am sitting in my recliner as I type this...fully expecting it to work exactly as it's supposed to.

It was a challenge, though.  Not that it was really difficult...but, when you attempt to do something for the first time, the instructions sometimes take a while to sink in.  Plus, as usual, there were interruptions galore.

My brother Andy and one of his sons, Jason, stopped by this afternoon for a visit. We had a nice visit and I had Jason look at the router box to see if it looked like there was any reason it wouldn't be suitable for my computer.  He thought it looked like what I probably needed, so after they left, and after I finished watching the movie I had paused when they arrived, I headed to the computer and started opening the box.

About that time, Carolyn called to say that she and the kids were coming over for a little visit.  So, the installation had to wait a little while longer.  Once they left, I headed upstairs again and tried to decipher what were actually very clear illustrations of the connections between the computer, the existing internet modem and the router.  The process was made more difficult by my not realizing that an actual physical connection to the internet was required during the installation...even though the instructions clearly stated that an actual physical connection to the internet was required.

By then it was time to make supper...so, off I went to create another culinary  masterpiece.

I'm going to spare you most of the rest of this adventure.  There were multiple user names and passwords, both generated by the router and me.  There was registration, confirmation of registration, upgrade of firmware, question submitted to the support team, email from the support team, closing down, unplugging and finally trying the wireless internet connection.

Which didn't work.  But Windows very kindly took me by the hand and led me to the place I needed to be and did everything except input the Network Security Key for me.  Unfortunately, as it turned out, because I didn't know what the hell that was.  I went back through all the passwords and eventually figured out what was needed and input it.  And voila!  I was connected.

Truth be told, the router installation CD, the router website, and windows did most of the work...I was necessary to connect the pieces, put the CD into the slot, and a few other things.  It reminds me of a joke about NASA sending a monkey and an astronaut into space during the early days of space flight.  At a press conference it was explained to the media that the monkey could take off, pilot, navigate, operate the computer and land the spacecraft.  Someone in the audience asked, "If the monkey can do all that, what does the astronaut do?"  The answer..."Feed the monkey." In my case, I guess I'm the astronaut.

So, as I said at the beginning, I am now sitting in my recliner with my feet up, typing like mad while Blogger saves every little while.  It seems like a better connection than when I was wired, but I don't know how that could be.  It's probably just the way it is at this moment.  I'll have to see how it does on the Snapfish website.

Oh, and the printer decided to be wireless today, too.  I don't know why.

I mowed...big deal

I mowed.  Nothing funny happened.  I didn't think of anything funny to post about.  I didn't see a single cow or any other livestock.  What a bore!

On a more positive note, I'm showered and have nice clean hair...all dried and purty.  I feel GOOD!  I feel so good it makes me want to....SHOUT!  Throw my hands up and SHOUT!...

Wait...that wasn't what I meant to say...must be the margarita kicking in.  Just kidding...it's only noon...too early for a margarita.  Maybe I'll have a beer.  Just kidding again, although if I were making a hot dog I might actually have a beer with it.  It is Saturday, after all.

That's not what I meant to say either.  I meant to say it makes me want to wash my sheets again.  Almost.

Photo Book Update

Sadly, I wasn't able to finish the 20 page photo book by the midnight deadline to get 50% off.  It was running so slow...don't know if it was the Snapfish website or my internet connection...I'm leaning toward Snapfish...a whole bunch of people trying to take advantage of the big discount bogged down the system.

But, the good news is that (this time) I was able to save what I had before I exited the program and don't have to start from page 2 again.  I may have mentioned (I can't remember what I've written previously, even though it was just a day or two ago) that the automatic saves by Snapfish were lasting longer that the interval between the saves.  The first 200+ photos I loaded up took no time at all, but the ones I loaded up during the last two days took FOREVER!  In fact, I had to quit the program several times because I couldn't tell if it was doing anything or not.  I didn't worry about quitting without saving because the program was saving every few minutes.  Well, I don't know what it was saving, because when I reopened it, I was back almost to square one each time.  Except for the last time I exited. I tried to exit about midnight last night.  I kept pushing the "save" button and it would get busy with the little circle and stay busy for 5-10 minutes and then a window would come up telling me that it was sorry but it couldn't save at this time...try again in a few minutes.  Nice.  I did that several times, getting the same message each time.  Then I noticed that there was a little toolbar above the save button and one of the items was "file."  I clicked on that and there was another "save", so I clicked on it and it apparently did the job because it had saved all the pages I had done.

Instead of being upset about not finishing it, however, I've decided to look upon this setback as an opportunity to improve the book.  I put a scanned photo taken at our wedding on the same page as a photo of us at our 45th anniversary party (not a big party...just the kids & our nephew and his wife...not even the grandkids.)  All the photos from our wedding have turned a kind of mauve color...almost like they were proofs.  Anyhooo, when I looked at that on the photo book page a few minutes ago, I thought maybe I should take it to my photo editing program and try to work on making it better and if I can do that (improve it, I mean), I'll replace the one I put in the book.

Since I had a page with pictures of my 65th birthday, I thought...why don't I find a picture of me as a young girl and scan that and put it into the book on that page.  So, I'll continue working on the book and wait for another big discount opportunity before I have it printed.  Maybe I'll get books ready on the Shutterfly and Walgreen's websites, too. Maybe not.

Photo book blues

Arggh!  Until late last night my internet speed was fine.  Not the fastest, but fast enough to keep me pretty happy.  Suddenly, it slowed waaay down...and I'm getting very annoyed.

I've only put photos on 2 or 3 pages in the 20 page long photo book.  Once I get all the layouts and photos and text in I still need to change the page backgrounds.  At the rate it's going, I should have it ready by the next time Snapfish offers 50% off.  Which is fine, I guess, since I was only making the book for me, anyway.

It's been one thing after another, again.  I mentioned in the last post that I was able to install two wireless devices with no problem at all.  Well, a few hours ago the printer acted like it had never met the rest of us before.  I had to hook it up with the cable.  I don't really want to even try it wirelessly again since I spent a couple of hours bouncing from one window to another with no success.

I was made aware of the printer issue when I tried to scan a photo taken at our wedding in 1965 and the  BRAND NEW printer wouldn't scan.  So, that started the bouncing from website to website.  At the HP website I read that my selected printer (an all-in-one printer, scanner, copier) was not ready for Windows 7.  WHAT?  Turns out there's a workaround for the issue.  I can use Windows Live to import from the scanner.  Luckily, Windows Live is already on the computer, but I still had to register.  Registering generated an email with a request for me to confirm my email.  The instructions were to copy the address given, open Windows Live and paste the address into the window.  Since the speed isn't up to par, that took a little while.  But, I got it done.

Meanwhile...Snapfish was STILL attempting to load a photo onto a page.  It had been busy at that for 30-45 minutes...not normal.  I had deleted it and retried it several times and even tried loading a new photo onto a different page.  All I got was the little circle spinning, letting me know that it was "working."  Yeah, right!

So, I closed it all down at about 2:00 and made a sandwich.  When I came back to it awhile ago, it was still slow...so, I closed it again and decided to whine about it here.  To make it perfect, Blogger is being slow and telling me "an error occurred while saving."

And there you have it!  My unproductive morning and (so far) afternoon.  As I said at the start... ARGGH!

From beginning to end is a somewhat crooked path

At least it is for me.  I've chronicled the way my day usually goes in an earlier post.  I actually wasted a lot of time trying to find that post so I could put a link here.  It would help if I labeled the posts.  Maybe one day I'll go back and do that.

As for right now, I've been doing my usual  zig-zagging through the day.  I start out doing one thing and take a detour in another direction and then another and another.  While I've essentially been in the same spot all day...in front of the computer...I've had lots of things going on with the computer.

I decided to work on a photo book (for myself) because I received an email from Snapfish telling me that photo books were 50% off until tomorrow.  So, I thought I'd upload all the photos I'd taken during the first half of this year to the website.  Well, not all of them.  I take pictures of some things that won't make it into a photo book. For instance, I have a couple of photos of a rock next to a penny.  The rock was in a package of frozen black-eye peas at New Years dinner, I think.  It was roughly pea-sized.  I had the penny in the photo for size comparison.  That was just in case I decided to send an email to the food company.  Carolyn found that rock in a bite of black-eyed peas...luckily she realized it was a rock before she bit down on it. That's just one example of a photo you won't see in my photo book.

I also managed to get the wireless mouse installed as a device on the laptop.  And...the printer.  Yay!  I felt like I needed the mouse while I was uploading photos to Snapfish.  When I tried to select multiple photos to upload using the touchpad, I would occasionally end up making copies of a bunch of them.   So, I thought that the mouse would help give me more control.  This mouse is a lot more sensitive than the wired one on the old computer.  The cursor looks like it's on crack.  Maybe I'll get used to it.  I don't need it so much for the type of thing I'm doing at this moment.  But I know I prefer it for scrolling and moving from place to place on the screen.

Ugh!  It's nearly 8 PM and if I'm going to get a photo book for 50% off, I need to get busy on it.  Maybe tomorrow I'll think about opening that box with the router in it and try to get set up for internet away from this desk.  Yes, I'll think about that tomorrow.

Babysitting

Friday

Well...the fun hasn't started yet. No, I'm not sitting with one of the grands. I'm sitting with the computers while my files get transferred from the old computer to the new one. This is attempt number 5 or 6...I've lost count.  The transfer cables that Carolyn bought when she got her Dell did not work on my new computer, possibly because I got a 64-bit machine, although I don't really know. Just guessing.  Brent picked up the cable I needed yesterday and I'm now on my third attempt with them. Apparently, the new computer goes into a standby mode after sitting idle for a while. Moving the mouse has not proved to be successful in getting it going again. I've had to (improperly) turn it off to get it started again. Not an auspicious beginning to my experience.  It's quite frustrating.

However, as most of you know...getting angry at the computer is pretty pointless. And we've been conditioned over the years to accept what it dishes out and move on.  As an example:  I am typing this post into an email on my iPhone, practicing using both thumbs.  I'm not very good at it and constantly have to correct run-on words, accidental returns and hitting the "n" or "m" when I mean to hit the spacebar. And, I think I'm actually getting worse instead of better.  Just a minute ago I hit "send" when I meant to scroll. That sent this email to my blog and stowed it as a draft. I then go into my blog and open the draft and either publish it or  continue working on it.  Well, crap!  I just accidentally hit send again.

Anyhooo, I decided to set the alarm on my phone for 22 minutes. When it chimes, I go move the mouse so it knows it's being tended. So far I think that is keeping it going.  It looks like it's transferred about 50% of the 32.4 GB it's supposed to move. It indicates that it will take another 5 hours or so. That time estimation fluctuates up and down, so I won't bank on it. I'll just plan on getting plenty of exercise today, running up and down the stairs.

Saturday

I did all that running up and down the stairs for about 10 hours.  Every 22 minutes for 10 hours.  The last time I got upstairs, the computer had apparently shut down and restarted because it was waiting for me to log in.  I never saw a message saying that it had finished and I didn't see a list of transferred files which I was supposed to see.  The last time I was up here before that happened, I estimated (because it didn't show percentages) that it had about 10 % left to transfer.  It did indicate that it had about an hour and a half to go.  It looks like most of the files transferred, but I haven't been able to find the Quicken data files that I need or the contact files for two email programs.  Not to worry...they're still on the old computer, on the online backup and on a flash drive and the cavalry is coming.  My computer guru has said he will come and help me sometime next week.  Now I just need to clear a path and do a lot of dusting and hope my calves don't cramp up from all the trips up and down the stairs both yesterday and today.

I did get my new printer out of the box and installed it today.  Still have some work to do to be wireless, though.  I'm waiting for Jedd to help me with that, too.  You should see this room.  Stuff everywhere.  My laptop is on top of a pile of papers and a notebook.  I threw a bunch of old paperwork into a box to look at later.  I had to do that to make room for the old printer, which is still hooked up to the old computer.  A few weeks ago the old printer started printing badly.  New cartridges, aligning the cartridges, cleaning the cartridges...none of that fixed the problem.  It was leaving off the bottom part of about every other line.  The old printer was over four years old, so I decided to get a new one.  And here I am with two computers, two printers, cables strung every which way, papers, fileboxes, storage boxes...it's a nightmare.

One of these days this will be a distant memory and then I can start to have fun.  Soon, I hope.

My Dell is Here!

I was surprised to find that my new computer had arrived while I was at the bay.  It wasn't supposed to be here until about Tuesday.  But, yay!

I've been home for about 5 hours and still haven't even opened the box.  There's just so much stuff to put away after a few days at the bay.  Plus I needed to go get the transfer cable from Carolyn, which meant a visit with Jax, who was thrilled to see me.  And I needed to stop by and see Gage and Zane.  Zane has yet another cut...a very small one sort of between his eyebrows.  He is always running into something or hitting his head on something else.  I talked Wendy into putting a little butterfly strip on it at least for tonight, but she pulled it off so many times trying to get it positioned just right that it has probably fallen on by now.

So anyway...when I got back to the house, Wayne was here and I needed to make him (and me) something to eat.  Then clean up the kitchen and then unpack all my clothes, etc.  It's now 10 PM and I don't know if I want to even open the box at this point.  If I did, I'd probably spend hours trying to figure it out. I think I'll just take a shower and watch some television and possibly tackle it tomorrow.

A Few Days at the Bay

Just got back from several days at the bay.  What fun!  Many of my cousins were there, as well as good friends, so we had lots of opportunities to get together and talk about what we've been up to.

Virgie hobbled up and down the stairs, wearing the boot that is holding her ankle in place.  She broke her tibia during a walk at the bay almost two weeks ago.  She was lucky enough that it didn't need to be in a cast, so she is able to walk (carefully and slowly) in her boot.  She loves to be in the water at the bay, so on two different occasions she was trundled to the beach on either a golf cart or a Bad Boy.  Once there and either in a chair or on a mat, she could remove the boot and enjoy herself.  She crawled into the bay on hands and knees and then made her way out to where it was slightly deeper (2 to 3 feet deep).   The sun was hot, but the water was very nice, not warm as bathwater this time, cool and very comfortable.  This is our favorite way to visit, bobbing with the waves...sometimes feeling a little nibble from something in the water.

Carolyn brought Kate and Carlee and stayed with me Friday and Saturday.  The girls love to come to the bay.  Brent stayed home with Jax again, so it was just us girls at our bayhouse. Carlee spends much of her time changing clothes.  It will be interesting to see her reaction to wearing the plain clothes that are required at St. Philips Preschool.  She will be in Pre-K 3.  I don't know if they are ready for her!  Kate will be in kindergarten there and is an old hand.  She is excited that she has a special dress to wear every Friday when they go to mass.  They start a week from tomorrow.  It's hard to believe that summer is almost over for them.

Exercise is Dangerous!

Many of my friends are aware that I am opposed to exercising.  Any kind of exercising...yard work, house work, aerobics, stretching.  You name it...I don't want to do it.  Well, I don't mind playing the balance games on the Wii, but I haven't even done that for months and months.  I'm sure the Wii Fit will have a snotty remark for me when I finally turn it on again.

It (Wii Fit) does have an attitude at times.  Carolyn was signed in on my Wii when she had fewer kids and more time.  Occasionally she would come over to do some of the sports...ski jumping, slalom skiing, hula hoops, etc.  Then she got busier and also got her own Wii Fit and didn't come play with me anymore.  Every once in a while when I turn on the Wii, it will inquire about Carolyn.  The following is one conversation between the Wii and me:

Wii:  I haven't seen Carolyn around for a while.  How does she look?  (The second sentence might not be exactly what it said.)

Then it gave me several choices to gauge.

Wii: Does she look...() Better     () Worse   () About the same

I said:  About the same.  (She was pregnant, but other than that she was about the same.

Wii:  Maybe you aren't looking closely enough.  (Or something like that...THE BITCH!)

Really!  That was pretty much how the conversation went.  It was like talking to the HAL 9000 computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey...'I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave.'  A real attitude.

But, I digress.  Exercise is dangerous!  Just this past week, two people I know (a cousin and a friend) have broken a bone while walking!  I think both of them are in boots, rather than a cast...which is marginally better, I guess.  But still not very convenient.  Just a few months ago another cousin fell...while walking...and broke a bone in her wrist.  Actually, come to find out, her bone was not broken, but they thought it was so they put a cast on it, forcing her to type all her emails in upper case using her left hand only.  She couldn't think and type at the same time...(sorry, Judy, but you know it's true).  I had to keep sending her emails asking for clarification when she left out parts of her message or just ended in the middle of a sentence. To add insult to injury, she found out when she went to have the cast removed that it wasn't broken after all.  They had noticed it upon further study of the x-ray, but neglected to let her know until she had been wearing the cast for 2 or 3 weeks.    My friend, Pat, had bunion surgery as soon as school was out in June.  She wore a boot for all of June and some of July.  She had the audacity to walk her usual hour and a half one day last week and caused her foot to swell and hurt.  The doctor read her the riot act for...wait for it...walking.

A couple of years ago another friend of mine fell...yes, while walking, and broke her arm.  And yet another friend broke her ankle (I think it was her ankle) on her way to exercise.  Come on!  Can it be any more clear that exercise is dangerous?

I make it a habit to not exercise.  You can't hurt yourself while sitting in a recliner reading.  Well, there was that one time when my underwear rode up and I tried to fix it without getting out of the chair, thereby getting a cramp in my leg.  But, it was just that one time.
